Press Conference on the American Health Care Act

On Friday, March 17th, 2017, SBSS partnered with Assembly Member Miguel Santiago, Fight4OurHealth Coalition, SEIU Local 2015, Justice In Aging, and older adults to hold a rally and press conference at SBSS Mid-City Senior Center opposing the Affordable Care Act repeal.

The changes to Medicaid proposed by Congress will make it more expensive for older adults to access basic health care services, as well as long-term services and supports that allow them to age at home and in the community for as long as possible.

During the press conference, over 100 older adults and community members joined together to spread awareness of the negative impact the American Health Care Act will have on our communities.

Thank you ABC 7, KCAL 9, Univision, and Estrella TV for airing the story and helping to spread awareness of issues that negatively effect older adults in our community.

SBSS' AGEnts for Change, Hermie Cruz and Orlando Estrada are featured in some of the clips, as well as our partners Health Access California, Social Security Works and Justice in Aging.

Living on the Edge: A Crisis in Senior Housing

St. Barnabas Senior Services showed the senior voice of homelessness at the Living on the Edge: A Crisis in Senior Housing event.

The event brought housing advocates and older adults to discuss ways to end homelessness and share their personal stories of what it’s like to be a homeless older adult. Research shows that 64% of seniors in LA County are spending more than 30% of their income on rent, causing them to be ‘rent burdened’ which is a predictor of potential homelessness.

Homelessness impacts many clients at SBSS. Seven out of ten clients seen by case managers at SBSS Mid-City have a housing related issue and six to ten clients per month seen at SBSS Mid-City case management are facing homelessness in the next year.

Congressman Becerra and AARP visit SBSS

On August 22, 2016, SBSS was proud to host AARP and Congressman Xavier Becerra for a special event honoring Congressman Becerra's work in the community.

AARP presented Congressman Becerra with their Champions of 50+ Award at SBSS' Mid-City Senior Center. We were proud to share this moment with our colleagues at AARP and the older adults we serve.

Thank you Congressman Becerra for taking the time to answer questions from seniors in attendance and for all your work to help older adults age with dignity.
