Fresh Finds, Happy Hearts (Healthy Parfait Instructional Video)

Learning how to choose and cook with seasonal produce is helping our members turn fresh ingredients into healthy, affordable meals.

For many older adults in our community, a trip to the farmers market is more than just shopping—it’s a chance to reclaim health, choice, and connection. At SBSS, we recently hosted a presentation that went beyond simple nutrition tips. Members learned how to choose foods that fit their dietary needs, prepare affordable dishes, and even stay nourished during emergencies.

With this knowledge fresh in their minds—and vouchers in their hands—they set out to the Echo Park Farmers Market. Some were visiting for the first time. They wandered among colorful stalls, sampling produce they’d never tried before and picking fresh herbs, greens, and vegetables they now knew how to cook with confidence.

At the center, we shared a simple parfait recipe made with fresh fruit and yogurt that can be purchased at the farmers market. Laughter and smiles filled the room as members layered berries, granola, and yogurt into cups, surprised at how something so easy to make could taste so good—and be so healthy. Many said they planned to make it at home for breakfast or to share with grandchildren.

Thanks to your support, we’re helping older adults nourish their bodies, learn new ways to eat, and strengthen their independence. And when our neighbors thrive, our whole community grows healthier, more resilient, and more connected.
