Celebrating Aging, One Birthday at a Time

At St. Barnabas Services (SBSS), birthdays are more than a date on the calendar. They are a reflection of life, resilience, and community. In a culture that often downplays aging, SBSS takes a different approach: we celebrate it openly, proudly, and together.

Across each of our centers, birthdays are honored every month in a shared celebration that brings members together in a way that is both simple and deeply meaningful. Instead of letting birthdays pass quietly, we gather everyone born in that month and celebrate them collectively, ensuring no one is overlooked and everyone has a moment to feel seen. Laughter fills the room, candles are lit, and for many, it becomes a highlight of their month.

But when it comes to milestone birthdays, turning 70, 80, 90, or even 100, the celebration becomes something even more special. These moments represent decades of lived experience, stories, and strength. At SBSS, milestone birthdays are recognized as community wide events. Members, staff, and often family come together to honor the individual, turning what could be a quiet personal moment into a shared celebration of life.

That sense of pride in aging is something many of our members embrace. As Prince Junior shared in his recent interview ahead of his 80th birthday on April 10, there is something powerful about being in a space where people are proud of their age. At SBSS, aging is not hidden, it is honored.

We also actively collaborate with families who want to celebrate their loved ones in meaningful ways. Maria’s family, for example, reached out to ask if they could bring a mariachi group and food to celebrate her. We worked together to make it possible, turning her birthday into a vibrant and joyful community event. For Violet, she wanted to bring food to share with others, and we complemented her celebration with a live operatic singer to make the moment even more special. These personalized touches reflect how deeply we value each individual and their story.

The importance of these celebrations goes beyond joy. They have real, measurable benefits. Research consistently shows that social connection plays a critical role in healthy aging. According to studies from the National Institute on Aging, older adults who remain socially engaged experience lower rates of depression, improved cognitive function, and even longer life expectancy. Celebrations like birthdays, especially when in a group, help reduce isolation and create opportunities for connection.

There is also something transformative about shifting the narrative around aging itself. In many spaces, people hesitate to share their age. At SBSS, members proudly announce it. Turning 80 or 90 is not something to downplay. It is an achievement. It is a testament to perseverance, growth, and survival.

And that pride is contagious.

Volunteers play a key role, often joining us to help decorate, serve meals, and simply share in the joy. Their presence adds another layer of connection, reminding our members that their lives matter not just within SBSS, but to the broader community as well.

At its core, celebrating birthdays at SBSS is about more than marking time. It is about honoring people. It is about ensuring that no one feels forgotten, that every year is acknowledged, and that every life is celebrated.

Because getting older is not something to hide.

It is something to be proud of.
