Honoring Caregivers Like Rosa on National Caregiver Appreciation Day

On March 3, we recognize National Caregiver Appreciation Day, honoring the millions of unpaid family caregivers who dedicate their lives to loved ones with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and aging needs.

Rosa is one of them.

An older adult herself, Rosa provides full-time care for her adult daughter with a disability. Each day includes mobility assistance, meals, medications, and constant supervision, all while managing her own aging-related health concerns.

Like many caregivers, Rosa put her own well-being last.

Last year, she was approved for in-home assistance, but approval did not mean support. For nearly 12 months, repeated outreach led to caregiver rejections. Without help, Rosa continued carrying the full physical and emotional weight alone, risking her own health and the stability of her daughter’s care at home.

No older adult should have to choose between caring for their child and caring for themselves

After connecting with Maria, a Care Manager in SBSS’ Family Caregiver Support Program, things began to shift. Maria took a hands-on approach by personally reaching out to caregivers, clearly defining responsibilities, and persistently advocating on Rosa’s behalf. What had stalled for nearly a year became a coordinated effort.

Rosa secured a caregiver for her daughter.

Today, she is no longer alone in the daily demands of care. She can attend her own medical appointments, rest when needed, and preserve her independence while her daughter remains in safe hands.

This is the relief caregivers bring.

And this is the impact SBSS makes possible.

Rosa’s story is not unique. Family caregivers are at significantly higher risk for stress-related health conditions, and many struggle to navigate complex systems without guidance. Through SBSS’ Family Caregiver Support Program, older adults like Rosa receive more than referrals, they receive advocacy, coordination, and sustained support that prevents crisis before it happens.

On National Caregiver Appreciation Day, we honor caregivers everywhere and we remain committed to ensuring they are never left to navigate these challenges alone.

Because when caregivers are supported, entire families stay strong.

And that is only possible because of a community that believes they deserve care too.
