Champion Your Health

Aging Well Starts Here

Every May, we celebrate Older Americans Month alongside our aging community. This year's theme "Champion Your Health" is a call to action: a reminder that healthy aging isn't something that simply happens to us, it's something we pursue together, with intention, community, and the right support by our side.

At SBSS, we take an active role in empowering older

adults to take charge of their own well-being. From the moment a new member walks though our door or welcomes us into their home, we are committed to providing the tools and resources to live well, feel well, and age well.

A Story of Resilience

Before connecting with SBSS, Marta simply didn't know programs like ours existed. Like many older adults, she was managing her day-to-day life on her own, handling medical appointments, staying home between visits, and getting by. She was doing fine. She just didn't know how much more was available to her.

That changed when Marta was connected to SBSS's Care Management Program in February 2024. Her care manager introduced her to a world of resources, programs, and people she hadn't had access to before, and what started as practical support quickly became something much richer: a fuller, more connected, more enjoyable daily life.

On the practical side, SBSS helped Marta set up her home with comfort and confidence in mind, installing grab bars, safety rails, and a security door, providing a walker, enrolling her in the Emergency Alert Response System, and most recently, replacing her old mattress with a new supportive bed that has made a world of difference in how rested and ready she feels each morning. With those pieces in place, Marta has more energy and peace of mind to focus on the parts of life she actually enjoys.

And there is plenty to enjoy. Marta is now a regular at SBSS fitness classes, joining fellow members for group sessions that keep her moving, strengthen her body, and just as importantly, give her something to look forward to each week. She has made friends there. Real ones. The kind you ask about by name and save a seat for.

She has also become an enthusiastic participant in SBSS's health and wellness workshops, where topics like managing diabetes, understanding arthritis, and supporting pulmonary health are covered in an accessible, welcoming setting. Marta walks away from these sessions not just more informed, but more confident, better prepared to have meaningful conversations with her doctors and to make choices that align with her own health goals.

Technology, once an afterthought, has opened new doors too. Through SBSS's tech education classes, Marta has learned to video call family members, look up health information, access tele-health services and stay connected in ways that simply weren't part of her life before. Each new skill is a small independence, and they add up.

Marta's story isn't about hardship overcome; it's about possibility discovered. She is 75, active, informed, and surrounded by a community that genuinely knows her name. That's what SBSS is here to offer, not just services, but a richer, more supported version of the life you're already living.

As we celebrate Older Americans Month, Marta reminds us that aging is not a process of winding down, but a time to "Live, Feel, and Age Well". This month recognizes the profound impact older adults have when they remain engaged, independent, and integrated into the fabric of their neighborhoods. By fostering these vital social ties, we provide the foundation for true independence, ensuring every individual has the resources and confidence to navigate their own path and live life on their own terms.
